Back at it

First of all…Happy New Year! While the end of 2013 was a bit rocky for me, thing are looking up for 2014 🙂
Somewhat to my surprise, I was cleared to begin exercising again at my 6-week postpartum checkup. I felt both excitement and dread at the news – excitement that I’m healing so quickly and can begin running again but dread at having to confront how much fitness I’ve lost and how long it may take to get back to normal. I did my first workout yesterday and while it felt really good to get moving again it was also very humbling. (Despite being short and very unexciting, I will share my workouts in case anyone else is interested in beginning a running program or looking to get back into running after an injury or other long layoff) My first workout was a 5 minute walking warm-up, 15 minutes of alternating one minute of walking and one minute of running, followed by a 5 minute walking cool down for a total of 25 minutes. I followed it up with three 1-minute planks and some bridges to start building back my core strength. Running felt awkward and just those short 1-minute segments got my heart rate up pretty high (a sign of how aerobically unfit I am), but I was pleasantly surprised that the planks and bridges weren’t difficult (core work during pregnancy paid off!). I’ll probably repeat this workout for a couple days before extending it to 30 minutes, and then I will start increasing the running segments and decreasing the walking time. I don’t have a timeline yet of how long it will take to get to running 30 minutes continuously. My labor and delivery complications have made me extra cautious so I plan to take it day by day to see how I’m feeling and how my body is responding. I’m hoping it takes maybe four or five weeks? In addition to getting back to running I’m also focusing on core work to help rebuild my foundation before reintroducing regular strength training. It’s hard to believe that I was running 60-mile weeks a year ago – my how things can change!
Anyway, I’m back to blogging more regularly again (and despite now having a child I will try to keep the baby-related talk to a minimum) so expect more posts with workouts, health and fitness news, recipes etc. in the future…and of course my road back to fitness.
Cheers to 2014!
