Did You Hit 10,000 Today?

10,000 is the recommended number of steps you should take each day for general health and a decreased risk of several chronic diseases, including heart disease and type II diabetes. It’s very easy to keep track of your step count these days considering the recent explosion of pedometers and accelerometers onto the fitness market. I first purchased one (a fitbit) over a year ago for my husband who has a very sedentary job, and of course I had to buy one for myself too 🙂 I really had no idea how many steps I took each day before I got my fitbit. I was surprised by how much you have to move in order to hit 10,000 steps. I figured that my one hour walks with my dog would probably get me to 10,000 and was surprised to find out that I was still short (by a lot!) after our long walks. Apparently 10,000 steps is roughly equivalent to five miles so I guess it’s no surprise that I needed to move more even after a one hour walk. On days I train I easily get above 10,000 steps, but on days I don’t workout I really have to go out of my way to hit 10,000. I’m a huge fan of pedometers and accelerometers now because I think most people don’t realize how far short they are of 10,000 steps. They are great motivators to move more. Plus the new high tech models keep track of extra things like flights of stairs climbed, number of calories burned, and sleep patterns, and they also connect to your phone for easy tracking.
Since Violet’s birth I’m training much less than I used to and sitting MUCH more (with all the sitting I’m doing due to breastfeeding I’m probably putting a butt imprint on the couch – ugh!) so I’m relying on my fitbit to make sure that I hit at least 10,000 steps every day, even on days I don’t workout. It’s definitely a challenge on non-workout days, especially on days where it is extremely cold and/or rainy and I don’t do a long walk outside. My PSA for today is to consider purchasing one for yourself and see how many steps you take each day. You’ll probably be surprised. OK I’m off to get the rest of my steps in today – 181 to go!
