Week 29: Birth Class Part Two

11 weeks to go (well, 10.5 since I’m late posting the update this week)! After the big family shower over the weekend (complete with houseguests for 4 days) I was pretty tired at the start of the week but have resumed my normal energy levels again. The little one is kicking up a storm these days to the point where I can actually see my belly move sometimes! I found out that I passed my gestational diabetes screening test from last week, and my CBC and vitamin D levels are in the normal range too. I’m so thankful things are going well! Now that I’m past the 28 week mark my doctors appointments are every two weeks (instead of every four), so I’ll go back again next week.
We had part two of our birthing class last night. The class started with a short discussion of the various interventions we might encounter, and then focused on relaxation and breathing techniques for labor. The instructor even tried to have us mimic contractions by having us do wall sits for 60-90 seconds at a time and then practice some of the techniques. I found that I liked some of the techniques (like counter-pressure on the hips and back and using distraction techniques), but some I didn’t like (like spelling a word over and over again and using a scalp massager – it felt weird!). She also suggested bringing a stability ball to the hospital which I may end up doing since I find them rather comfortable to sit and rock on. Overall I think it was a good run through of various coping mechanisms, but I still feel a bit unsure of how to put it all together. I’m going to read some more books over the next few weeks and try to practice some of the techniques as well. I’m also doing a bit of research on doulas, but I’m not sure yet if I want one.
Workouts are going well! Pretty much same as the last several weeks (6 days of cardio including swimming, elliptical, walking on an incline, and spinning) except I skipped a strength workout over the weekend due to the shower so I had two days of lifting this week instead of three. (I’m even more determined to keep lifting as long as I comfortably can after reading that this pro-runner and new mama credits lifting in part for helping her have an amazing postpartum recovery). It was a bit odd this week though when my entire exercise class started discussing my pregnancy and body changes, including where I have and haven’t gained weight. At least they said it was ‘all belly’, but it is still such an odd thing that people feel totally comfortable discussing your body when you are pregnant. Even though the comments weren’t negative, it still feels like you are being critiqued. I’m a bit shy and self-conscious by nature so this is a pretty unenjoyable part of pregnancy for me. At least no one has come up and touched my belly – that person would likely lose a hand if they did!
Usually I’m a bit sad at the end of August that summer is nearly over, but this year I’m actually excited. First, because I survived a D.C. summer while pregnant and second, because my due date is getting closer! As easy as this pregnancy has been (so far!), I’m very eager to meet our little girl and actually start being a mom. I just need to get through this whole labor and delivery thing first…
